Jonas Honick

Born in New Kensington, Pennsylvania, Jonas is the son of Irvin, a World War II sergeant, and Mary, who worked at Pittsburgh Plate Glass. His upbringing instilled in him values of perseverance and community service, which he carried throughout his professional life. Jonas began his educational and athletic pursuits at Valley High School in New Kensington, where he excelled as a student and athlete, laying the groundwork for his future career. His academic success led him to choose Rosemary Hall for a postgraduate year, where he earned the David T. Layman Award, signifying his academic and athletic excellence. Continuing his education at Harvard University, Jonas majored in American History, fostering a deep appreciation for the subject that would later define his teaching career. At Harvard, he also made significant strides in basketball, playing under the tutelage of coaches like Tom "Satch" Sanders and Mike Jarvis, which shaped his coaching philosophy. After graduating, Jonas started his teaching and coaching career at Choate Rosemary Hall. His innovative teaching methods and motivational coaching quickly made him a beloved figure, and his basketball teams enjoyed considerable success, highlighting his prowess as a coach. In 1980, Jonas relocated to Northern California with his wife, Donna Mezias, and joined The Branson School in Ross. Over four decades at Branson, he became a crucial figure in the community, known for his dynamic teaching style and successful basketball program. Under his leadership, the school's basketball teams won numerous championships, and he was recognized with several coaching awards. Jonas's commitment to making a difference extended beyond the classroom and basketball court. His philanthropic efforts were particularly notable following a life-changing trek in Nepal, leading him to spearhead fundraising to rebuild schools devastated by the 2015 earthquake. He also organized food delivery services for nearly two decades in San Francisco's Tenderloin district, demonstrating his dedication to helping those in need. Upon retiring from active teaching and coaching, Jonas did not step away from the basketball community. He took on a role at Prolific Prep in Napa, California, where he mentors young athletes and coaches, imparting his extensive knowledge and experience.
